In power electronics, efficient cooling is essential to guarantee robust and reliable operation of modern power semiconductors. With a clear focus on state-of-the-art technologies, this training course concentrates on the design and application of various cooling strategies – ranging from traditional single-phase approaches through to innovative two-phase systems and new methods. The objective is to provide participants not only with the theoretical insights but also with comprehensive practical knowledge in the use of various measurement techniques and simulation methods.
Day 1: Following an overview of the principles of heat transfer and thermal conduction, traditional cooling concepts will be presented, with a discussion of challenges such as heat generation and noise. Participants will learn about the use of CFD simulations, including optimization, and discover how theoretical models can be compared with real-world test results. Based on these insights, advanced aspects of two-phase cooling will be discussed in depth. To ensure maximum practical benefit for participants, a simplified power module is presented, which is used as a demonstrator for the course. The fundamental analytical design principles of cooling are explained using the demonstrator. The first day concludes with a presentation of the various measurement methods and live demonstrations of how they are used in practice.
Day 2: It starts with a demonstration, evaluation and discussion of the various cooling principles, using the demonstrator presented on the first day as an example. The demonstrator forms the main focus of the subsequent practical exercises. The aim of the exercises is to encourage a high level of active participation from course participants. To this end, the course is divided into a simulation section and a measurement technology section, depending on the participants’ choice. The simulation section focuses on practical exercises on the computer concerning the handling of CFD calculations, which include steady-state, transient and optimization algorithms. In the measurement technology section, the focus is on carrying out and handling the various experimental methods. The goal is for participants, through a high level of own active participation, to acquire a solid understanding of the practical handling of power, velocity, pressure, temperature and acoustic measurements. Finally, the course, combined with networking opportunities, provides a solid foundation for future innovations in cooling techniques.
